IPAQ adaptation

Adaptation of Polish, English and Icelandic long version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) for wheelchair users

The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) is a widely used questionnaire of acknowledged high validity and reliability in general population. Thanks to its use, it is possible to collect data about health-promoting physical activity, which can be compared internationally. The questions concern three specific types of activity (walking, physical activity of moderate and high intensity), carried out within the last seven days. The modification of IPAQ for Wheelchair Users (IPAQ-WU) involved adding activities with the same energy cost (MET), but specific to wheelchair users. The energy cost (MET) and the type of activity of wheelchair users come from ‘Compendium of Energy Costs of Physical Activities for Individuals Who Use Manual Wheelchairs’ (Conger and Bassett, 2011). The International Physical Activity Questionnaire for Wheelchair Users (IPAQ-WU) is being currently evaluated in respect of its reliability and validity and for this reason we present only the draft version of the adapted questionnaire in Polish (IPAQ-WU_pl.pdf), English (IPAQ-WU_en.pdf) and Icelandic (IPAQ-WU_is.pdf).

The next stage of the IPAQ-WU validity evaluation will involve a comparison of the level of physical activity within the last 7 days assessed with the questionnaire and the Actigraph accelerometer. Then, the evaluation of IPAQ-WU in respect of its reliability will be carried out.
